Mumbai:

Men who believe that reacting to provocation is going to win them brownie points with the fairer sex, need a reality check.

It's not brawn, but brains, that seems to matter to women, who unaimously agreed that while they would appreciate a man standing up for them, they would prefer he exercise his mind rather than flex his muscles.

Are you agressive? Your face has the answer: Study

A recent study has come up with some astonishing data. It says that levels of aggression in a man can be measured by just looking at the shape of his face. The rounder the face, the more aggressive the person. The study, conducted by the Brock University in Ontario, Canada, has found a link between bad temper and face width to height ratio. The research discovered that the male sex hormone, testosterone, makes male faces more circular, which is linked to bad temper and aggressive behaviour.

Why are men more aggressive than women?

There are various reasons why men tend to be more aggressive than women.

Biological factors
Studies have shown that higher the testosterone, more the aggression. Lower levels of serotonin, a chemical in the brain, can make a person more impulsive, which only adds to his aggressive stance. Also, since men are physically stronger, some of them tend to use aggression to prove their masculinity.

Psycho-socio factors
Your upbringing and the environment that you live and interact in, also influences how aggressive you are.

How to deal with aggression
>>Don't face aggression with aggression.
>>Act maturely, be assertive but not aggressive, and know when to back off.
>>Have an opinion, but know how to state it without forcing it on others.

Think before you act: Gauhar Khan
Model Gauhar Khan says aggression is never acceptable. Instead of resolving situations, it only makes things worse. Men should resolve situations without getting into fights, and think about consequences before acting on impulse.

Find out, what women want

Aggressiveness doesn't turn women on. Men should try, and handle situations with tact.
Why is aggression not acceptable? Often, aggressiveness takes the form of possessiveness. I remember an incident where my friend was riding a bike with her boyfriend, and an auto driver passed a lewd comment. Since he could not get a hold of the driver, he vented his anger on her, saying how her clothes were too revealing.

Aggression is a complete turn-off. It's okay to be aggressive only if the situation demands it. Especially, if you believe that tact is not working, and it's a matter of protecting your dignity and honour.
Why is aggression not acceptable? Aggression may be counter-productive. Getting violent with thugs and criminals in a bid to prove your masculinity, serves no purpose. In most cases, you could put yourself, and your loved ones, in danger.

Aggression is  a turn-off. It's okay if men are being aggressive in a protective manner. If someone is being overtly physical with me, or there's a life-threatening situation, I would like my boyfriend to be aggressive. But if someone just passed a comment, I wouldn't want him to react violently.

Why is aggression not acceptable? It's better to resolve an issue without getting aggressive. When two people lose their composure, things generally just go from bad to worse.

What the guys have to say

Manav Gohil film and television actor
I believe that the only time aggression is acceptable is if it means protecting the people you love. Otherwise, it's best to ignore verbal jibes or any such provocation, and deal with situations with a calm head.

Rahul Gupta, Senior customer service associate
Getting aggressive is not the solution to a problem. There have been times when I have gone out with friends, and guys have tried to misbehave with girls in our group. Rather than getting into a brawl, we've dealt with the situation keeping our composure intact.
