Have you been sporting the bai bun?
By: Sheena Thomas

Mumbai: You might be having a bad hair day, but don't make it any worse by tying a bai bun. This signature look of our good-old kaamwali bais is achieved by haphazardly twisting the hair and securing it with a clip.

It doesn't matter if a few strands fall loose or that the bun gives way while in the act of being styled. Ladies, here's a reality check. Besides being very DM (downmarket), the bai bun also makes you look very dowdy. And if you need more brainwashing, read on:

* A little wind and a little drizzle, and you're the perfect picture of chaos. The bun will give way like a pack of cards.

* If you've just rolled up your ponytail and clasped it with a clip, chances are that there is a tiny hair fountain sticking out from the top of your head. Your hairdo is no architectural wonder, so let it loose.

* If you've got scanty hair, your bun must be resembling dental floss. So, if it's an apology for a bun, cancel it out.

* Chances are that you've been using a clip that is as down market as your hairdo. You probably picked up 3 for 10 bucks and thought you'd struck a great deal. We think you got fleeced. If the hairdo is disastrous, the clip sure suits the look.

* Yes we know that you want to flaunt your jewellery, but please devise more ingenuous ways of keeping your tresses from off your face !

Cool alternatives
A high ponytail
Make sure you tie it at the top of your head. You could use colourful clips to keep your bangs in place, if the front hair is too short

A plait
If the simple plait doesn't work for you, you could try something fancier like a French knot. It looks chic and keeps the hair off your face

Loose pony
If you like the casual look, a loose pony is for you. It looks feminine and classy

A half pony
Take the two strands from either side of your face and secure it in a pony, leaving the rest of your hair open

A chignon / pony-bun
"A chignon looks very sophisticated too," says Asha Hariharan, owner, Beyond the Fringe. Use a band with attached hair that's similar to yours. Make a half pony, folding your hair in the last knot of the band. For the pony-bun fold your pony into half with a fancy scrunchie tight enough to keep the bun in place
