The capital's ever-widening culturescape may certainly be a reason to rejoice, but with the burgeoning bounty of events comes the confusion of what to pick and what to pass. If wishes were horses, you'd have naturally liked to gallop to all the happening hot spots, even though that's not what would have pleased the connoisseur in you.
The reason we're all wired differently, and a single cultural affair that suits the intrinsic aficionado in you can be far more fulfilling than endless event-hopping. So, here's chasing away your weekend worries!
Overwhelming overload
Once upon a time in Delhi, holidays were for lazy leisure and evenings for homebound entertainment. Then, the all-engaging Culture Vulture descended with wingloads of stuff to look forward to art exhibitions, dance and music performances, film and food fests, book readings, poetry, mushairas, fashion shows, theatre et al.
Culture hubs grew at an exponential rate, high-headed honchos turned humble culture hermits and families flocked to catch all they could. Multiplexes started facing competition while for us, it was culture chaos.
Culture greed
We, as contemporary consumers, subscribe to the 'yeh bhi maangta, woh bhi maangta' school of thought, and aim to squeeze in a bit of everything that's listed in our favourite city guide.
Of course, we aren't foolish enough to head for hip-hop when we're ghazal buffs, but one request from a colleague or friend, and we jump in without a second thought, no matter the limitations of time or money. Or else, we turn escapists to avoid being caught in the mindless mish-mash.
Operation rescue
Going with the flow may seem irresistible to your cultural conscience, and this is a necessarily evil. Some tasting of the varied ingredients that make Dilli's culture curry is necessary, says artist-designer-filmmaker Muzaffar Ali.
"You must expose yourself to every art form to evolve and be aware of the inter-relationship between them. It is only then that you will arrive at what feels good," he suggests. As you experience the myriad moods that different arts induce in you, you will identify what delights you the most, both in body and spirit.
Now that the artistic abundance has been tried and tested, choose the options that complement your top interests. Urge friends and family to go through the process in order to evade the problematic phenomenon that'd haunt them otherwise.
Next, shortlist your favourites and decide on outings accordingly, making exceptions only when enthusiasm levels to witness something off your usual schedule are extraordinarily high.
