The work out-while-you-work machine
By: Aaishwari Chouhan

Mumbai:

If you are used to blaming impossible office hours for skipping your gym sessions, we suggest you think of a more creative excuse. With the convergence of a desktop and treadmill into what's called a Walkstation, working out while working in office, will be a cakewalk.

What's a Walkstation?

Invented by Steelcase, it's a treadmill-cum-computer designed to change the face of corporate workplaces and health of its workforce. At a maximum speed of 2 mph, the Walkstation lets you walk comfortably, burn calories, feel energised, while accomplishing the work you'd normally do while being seated.

Features:

* The desk sits on hydraulic legs allowing adjustments in height of the worksurface, at the push of a button.

* Keeping it minimal, the display console is simple and easy to read, showing speed, calories burnt, time and distance.

* Concealed shock absorbers minimise vibration and bounce, and the treadmill belt runs smoothly.

It's a fantastic idea. I'd love to surf the net while working out. My Internet usage is high and so, a walkstation suits me fine! Using a computer for work and exercise is perfect. I don't know how my employees will react, though.

It sounds interesting. I'd like to make time for work and a fitness regime. The Walkstation would  exterminate the "I don't have time to visit the gym" excuse. I see companies investing in this invention.

I don't like the idea since it might distract me from both, work and exercise. Besides, work and relaxation should be left separate. Exercising is about relaxing the mind. If I combined it with work, I'd end up getting stressed.

I love the idea. It serves a dual purpose. I receive official calls while I work out at the gym, and that often ends up distracting me. If there was a way to marry the two, I'd look forward to the experiment.

Why the fitness expert doesn't like the idea

Binisha Naik, Health Consultant, Health Mantras

1. People work out to de-stress or lose weight. It's the only time when they move away from professional tensions. Combining a treadmill with a computer would rob them of this relaxation. But if the computer is used for entertainment, I'd recommend it.

2. Multi-tasking is good, but not advisable while working out. Exercising needs focus. Some individuals might experience a rise in blood pressure if they combine work and exercise.

When is the best time to work out?

Mornings are good because it helps you begin your day on a good note. And once habituated, nothing can keep you away from working out.

After office work outs are good too since they help you de-stress. But there are chances of you skipping your regime since you are tired after a full day at the office.

Working out after a meal is not advisable. Having fruits or a sandwich, half an hour before your work out, is recommended. But it's always better to work out, then eat.

Those who work out to lose weight, should wait for 40 minutes after exercising, before eating anything, since the metabolism rate is high until then.
