5 ways to discover the interior designer in you

Mumbai:

Planning to decorate your home and have no idea what to do or how to go about it? Don't you worry, we shall tell you how to discover the interior designer lurking inside you:

* Get rid of clutter: Look around your house. Do you see piles of unwanted items cluttering up the space? If yes, then just sort it into what can be given away and what needs to see the insides of a dustbin.
By the end of this exercise you'll realise that your house is big enough, but you have been blocking the space unknowingly. However, freeing up space is only possible in the first place if you haven't collected too many must haves.

* Find out what's your style: When beginning to decorate your home, it's important to consider your sense of style. Before you undertake Operation Redecoration, visualise first how you would want your home to look like by the time you are done renovating it.  Ask yourself what kind of textures, patterns, floorings, wall paints and special effects you would like for your home.
Surf on the Internet, read interior books and you'll get better ideas for decorating your home. Also, see if your style fits your budget. Buy things that you think can be maintained easily and will last for a long time.

* Sort out the simpler stuff: The best thing to do is watch out for the latest decor stuff on TV, while watching movies or TV. You can even cut pictures from magazines or take prints of designs from the net for referrals.

* Always do a bit of research first: If you're not sure how a particular design or pattern will look on your walls, make sure you ask people with some knowledge in the field. Take ideas from friends who've got their home designed from an interior designer.
Or better yet, if you know any friend who's an interior designer call him/her home to ask whether your ideas are feasible and will suit your home or not in the budget you are planning. Find out what kind of decor will do justice to your home and where you can buy the stuff needed.

* Be confident: Once you're clear about how to go about doing up your house, be confident about your plan. Go step-by-step. Check and cross check everything. An easier thing to do would be to decorate your home in stages.

For instance, first paint the walls, then the furniture, then upholstery, then the accessories. Plan it month-by-month. It is easier on the pocket and you can see for yourself how the style you want evolves over a period of time.
