Alpana Gujral always knew she'd make a career in design. She dabbled in interiors for a while, but with the abolishment of the Gold Control Act in 1990, she traded bricks for precious stones.
"I was always been inclined towards jewellery. I could have chosen a career as a painter, but there was way too much competition there!" admits one of India's most famous artist Satish Gujral's daughter.
Her jewellery: Only the prowess of design could allow the decadent Mughal 'era to enjoy contemporary feel. "The Mughal civilisation had lot more romance, warmth and depth. Compare trinkets from then to one-dimensional diamond jewellery. My latest collection takes inspiration from the medieval Mughal Gardens," explains Alpana.
Conceived as part of the Go Green campaign, her new collection titled, The Enchanted Garden includes handcrafted necklaces, cocktail rings, collars and cuffs crafted in precious stones, enamel and pure gold using Minakari work. "I want to create jewellery that allows the wearer to flaunt it, rather than keep it locked up."
International clientele: Kelly Preston, actor and wife of Hollywood star John Travolta, wore Alpana's
earrings when she made an appearance on the Conan O'Brien Talk show. Kill Bill star Uma Thurman is yet another loyal client.
The Enchanted Garden collection is available today (between 12 noon to 7 pm) and tomorrow (between 11 am to 7 pm) at Emerald Jade Room, first floor, the Luxury Wing, The Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Apollo Bunder
