Eye have a problem
By: Urmimala Banerjee

Mumbai: Trust us, your eyes cry out for relief every day, every hour. They squint in the hot sun, puff up in front of the monitor and turn red under the contact lenses. Our eyes are probably the most beautiful yet abused of all our sensory organs. And we don't realise this until we get an eye infection that brings us to tears. Here are some simple solutions to pamper your eyes everyday:

Contact lens
Irritation: "Remove your lenses before you go to sleep. Irritation happens when you wear your contact lenses beyond the specific time limit recommended by your practitioner," says ophthalmologist Gul Nankani
Blurred vision: At times, makeup may get under a lens making it greasy and blurring your vision. Remove your lenses and polish them to see clearly. Please rush to your practitioner if this problem continues
Redness:  You can get redness in the eye when you clean your lenses in general soap. Always clean them in the prescribed solution. To get rid of the redness, splash cold water in your eyes and put some astringent eye drops
Remember: Always select lenses after consulting an eye specialist. Unless you are using fresh lenses, be sure to clean, rinse and disinfect your lenses every time before you put them in your eyes. And always buy the best quality lenses

Sun damage
Bloodshot eyes: "If your eyes turn red when exposed to the sun, put a few drops of a lubricating or moisturising eye solution in your eyes," advises Nankani
Tired eyes: "An ice pack or a cold compress refreshes your eyes. It supplies the necessary moisture to your eyes," says Nankani
Puffy eyes: If you see puffiness around your eyes, take two cucumber slices and place them over the eyes. Cucumber has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the redness and puffiness. You could also use eye gels. Keep them in the freezer and then apply them to your eyes
Remember: Make it a rule to step out in the sun with proper glares that offer sufficient UV protection to your eyes. Even if you wear UV protective contact lenses, you should wear a pair of glares to protect the area of the eye that is not covered by the lens

Computer glare
Vision problems: "Those working in front of the PC for long hours find it difficult to see far off objects. To prevent this, get up from your workstation every half an hour and look at distant things like the sky or a far off tree. This can prevent vision problems," says Nankani
Headaches: Put an anti-glare shield over the monitor to avoid  headaches. Also, make sure that the room isn't ill or over lit
Dryness: "On an average we blink 14-16 times a minute. But when in front of the monitor, we just stare. Officegoers should make a conscious effort to blink frequently while working on the PC," says Nankani. Warm compresses also help you battle dryness

Nature's cure
Wash your eyes at frequent intervals with cold water
Mix a few drops of lavender oil in two and half cups water and dip two cotton balls in it. Place the cotton balls over the eyes.
Take two cotton balls and soak them in warm tea. Place the cotton balls on the eyes for some time
Those who have weak eyesight should consume a glass of raw carrot and parsley juice every day
Inhaling the odours of sesame mixed in honey reduces the excessive wateriness of the eyes
