This has been a month of fashion, and being fashionably fatigued. The drape that's usually synonymous with the saree has now turned into a common sight in practically every designer's presentation, making us grind our teeth and say, "Again!" We thought we had seen it all until we watched Rahul Mishra's show for his new label, The Apple Tree.
The fabric: The Maheshwari weave is steeped in tradition, recognition and has supported the economy of Madhya Pradesh. Rahul thought it was about time the state was associated with modern chic. Exquisite in its ethnicity yet contemporary in its appeal, the honest transparency of the fabric was used by the National Institute of Design graduate, to create shapes that were cutting edge yet terribly grounded.
A black and white geometric pattern bustier dress with white satin lining, a black, cream and gold overdress with overstated lapels, a turquoise blue off-shoulder dress accented with cording and pleating, a white organza sleeveless dress accented with black piping, were a few pieces that defied the laws of pigeonholed drapery.
