Monica Bedi's Thought For Food
I am a non-vegetarian: I love seafood but apart from that I like chicken. I am not much into red meat. I love Thai food, especially their seafood soup.
I am an early riser when I have: To go to work in the morning. But if I don't have a meeting or a shoot then I wake up late.
The first thing I have when I wake up: Is warm water with lemon and honey. I started having it when I started a career in Hindi films. Earlier it wasn't like this but now that I am in films I have to take care of everything.
My schedule in the jail: I was in jail for five years. For three years I was in Portugal when the extortion case was going on and after that I was in India for two years. I had to get up at 6 in the morning. We would have bread and tea for. The tea in jail was watery, they would hardly add tealeaves or milk to it. It was like drinking coloured water. I was in two jails in India first in Hyderabad and later in Bhopal. I would dip the bread in tea and eat it though I knew that white bread is not good for health and is fattening too. Jail mein maintain karna toh bahut mushkil tha lekin tension itni thi ki figure maintan ho jaata tha.
The lunch in jail was: Either dal chawal or roti sabzi, you had to stand in the queue and wait for your turn just like in movies, you know they show a bell ringing and then you line up for food. The food was completely vegetarian.
In the evening we would get: Tea followed by dinner at 6. I am into yoga and meditation in a big way, I pray and read the Bible. I taught yoga and pranayam in jail to the inmates so that was one thing that really kept me going; I was able to survive only because of God.
Food in the house of Big Boss: It was pretty basic. If we completed our task succesfuly, we got a good budget otherwise it was boring food like dudhi ki sabzi, alu mutter etc. Ketkiji was in charge of the kitchen. She cooked vegetarian food. Nonâveg food was cooked by Rakhi and Sambhavana. My task in the house was making the beds, dusting, and lagaoing jhadoo, but yes, I made chappatis, I am good at them! Ketkiji made sooji ka halwa and modaks for Ganpati.
Now my breakfast is: I like to vary my breakfast I make sure I have egg whites because it has proteins. Since we work out proteins are a must. I may have a sandwich with brown bread or upma or poha. There is a cook at home who makes breakfast.
I tend to sip: Lots of water. It's very important to have lots of water.
My lunch comprises: Dal, roti, sabzi and lots of curd. I also have salads. My favourite sabzi is Sarson ka Saag and Makai ki Roti I guess because I am a Punjabi. I am not much of a dal person. I enjoy rajma, yes, but I prefer palak or methi to dals. I am not very fond of white beans (raagi).
I like to eat my dinner: Early but I end up having dinner by 9 or 9:30. I don't eat non-vegetarian fare every day. Sometimes we have a grilled chicken or steamed fish. I am more of a roti eater.
I love sweets: Especially chocolates and ice creams but I don't eat either, I control myself because they contain a lot of calories. In Indian desserts I like Khoya Barfi but my favourite is Gajar Halwa.
My fitness regimeN: I go to the gym everyday and I work out a lot. Main meditation aur yoga bhi karti hoon. Jail mein bhi karti thi aur sikhati bhi thi. I taught yoga, breathing exercises and pranayam to my fellow inmates.
I have a childhood memory of: Hot lemon tea. When I was a child, I lived in Dramen, Norway. I would go for a swim and drink hot lemon tea by the poolside. After a swim a hot lemon tea feels very good.
I eat all types of fruits but my favourite is: Mango which is again full of calories so I eat them sparingly. I also like sitafal and kiwi.
In the evenings I like to binge on: Bhel.
My Sunday lunch is: Chicken curry. I binge on Sundays. Us din calories ka nahin sooch ti!
My favourite cook in my family: Is my dad. He doesn't need a recipe book to cook. He makes excellent chicken. One dish I specialise in: Chicken biryani.
My best dining friends: I would name my childhood friends from Norway. Her name is Aut/Natalie. In Bombay, my best dining friends are Seema (she is not from the film industry) and Sahila Chadda.
My comfort food is: Khichadi or South Indian curd rice.
In food stuff I can't resist buying: Walnut cake.
My favourite restaurant in Bombay: China Garden, I am not very fond of South Indian food because I have done a lot of Telegu films and eaten too much of it. But I like rasam.
My favourite cuisine: Thai.
My favourite spice: Oregano.
My favourite kitchen appliance: Microwave.
My favourite beverage: Pina Colada.
My favourite poison: I don't drink at all.
The fruit or vegetable I resemble: a strawberry or cherry
In Dubai, I relished: Arabian food. Woh log sausages banate hain, garlic aur safed chane ke saath. It's delicious. I would rarely cook because there were cooks aplenty.
My idea of a romantic meal: I would like my man to take me out on a cruise. A candle lit dinner and seafood would be ideal.
