'Mumbai deserves the best'

By: JS Augustine
J S Augustine, associate director, Everest Developers, tells us why...

Mumbai is a great city and deserves the best. We seriously need to do away with the existing slums and ensure that more slums don't crop up in the city. This will make the implementation of the infrastructural projects a lot easier. We also need to develop the empty spaces spread across the city. Many of them are under trusts, litigation, personal assets, etc.

Considering the traffic in the city, we need a good traffic management and signal system in place. The city doesn't have proper road maps; this hinders the traffic flow. In most big cities across the world, a tourist can guide himself/herself with a road map; this isn't the case in Mumbai. We need wider roads as well as multi-level roads on the main routes. Moreover, it's important that the current planners make projects that last for the next 20-30 years and not just for five years.

All of us should look at utilising all the channels of commuting as that can change the way we live and work. Mumbai has a natural harbour like Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. We should seriously consider developing the coastal belt, especially water transport.  Last but not the least, the public should also support the
government in making Mumbai a better city.
