Bring home spring

By: Payal Kamat

Here comes the New Year. And the beginning of spring. As the weather turns warm and trees start blooming, it's time to brighten up your home too. Here are some ideas to welcome the New Year tomorrow with lots of colours in your home:

Clean up
If you've been wondering where to start, we will help you. Take a duster and broom in your hand and give all the room turns and corners a swipe. Take time to clean your ceiling fans as well, they'll have collected dust in the cool season. The mirrors, windowpanes and glass shelves too need to be wiped, so go ahead.

Clean the curios and showpieces with tissue, but make sure you keep your kids out of the way. If you've been meaning to pull out the kitchen trolleys, this is the time to do it. Even the storage cupboards can do with your attention, provided you have the time and help.

Linen change
Take down those dark coloured, heavy winter curtains and bring out your whites and pastels with warm shades in light fabrics and colours like orange, green and red. Your linen and upholstery too need a replacement. Flowery prints and cotton material is what your furniture should be done up in.

You might even want to replace your murky and dark doormats with bright ones.

Decorate lavishly
Since it's a festival and you have a holiday, spend some time decorating your home. Bring out the scented candles and if no one's allergic, the incense too. Polish the copper urns and fill them with water and some colourful flowers. Place them at the entrance to every room and you'll see what a difference they make. A rangoli and a toran at the entrance won't go amiss.

Go green
Since Gudhi Padwa marks the beginning of spring; you too can bring it home. Go to a nursery and get home some plants. They will add colour to your home and make sure that it stays cool for the next couple of months. Place the plants either on the windowsill, if you don't have a balcony, or in your living room corner.

Alter the setting
A smart way to bring a new look to your home is to change the setting. Shift movable objects like couch, centre table, dining table, Indian seating, TV trolley from their original places. Rearrange the furniture and you'll notice an immediate impact. You might also want to add a few knick-knacks on your coffee table or the wall unit. Old photographs, greeting cards, souvenirs are items that will add character to your decor.
