Titwala Ganesh Mandir
Ganesh Utsav has begun in the city with immense fanfare and during this annual 10-day festival, the city witnesses crowds heading towards a plethora of mandals with creatively-designed Ganpati idols
The city’s Ganpati temples are thronged by devotees, especially during this festive season. Apart from the Siddhivinayak temple at Prabhadevi, another prominent Ganesh temple that sees a lot of crowd is the Mahaganpati temple, which is also referred to as the Titwala Ganesh Mandir, located in a small town named Titwala, in Thane district. Millions of devotees visit this temple all through the year and the crowd swells during the Ganesh Utsav.
It is said that the temple was built by Shakuntala to minimise the effect of a curse upon her. Her prayers resulted in her reunion with her husband, King Dushyanta. The remains of the temple were discovered during the reign of Peshwa Madhavrao who helped to rebuild it.
