Auto driver held for chain-snatching

On Feb 19, the Borivli police arrested a 32-year-old auto-rickshaw driver for chain-snatching.

Mohammed Soyeb Assautulah Sheikh, a resident of the Ganpat Patil slum, was caught for snatching a gold chain from a woman walking on the road after a complaint was filed against him on Feb 18.

The incident happened at around 9.45 pm on Chandavarkar Road. After snatching the chain Sheikh fled in his auto, says an official from Borivli police station, who does not wish to be named.

According to the official, once the complaint was lodged they started the search for the accused as per the description provided by the victim.

We suspected that it may have been someone from the slum so we started our search at the Ganpat Patil slum, found Sheikh at his residence and arrested him, reveals the official. On interrogating him he told us that he had been involved in a total of five similar cases and had earned around Rs 50,000, he adds.

He has been arrested for theft and is currently in police custody.
