Relocate maternity hospital~ say MASS
By:

MASS activists also want the civic body to consider relocating the maternity hospital. A building at Orlem meant for a maternity hospital was handed over to the BMC in 1997 by developers Rashesh Kanakia. This is still lying vacant. The Choksi Maternity Home should be relocated there, says Terence Dsouza from MASS.

The activists also want the state government and the BMC to allot more funds towards the repair of such hospitals. Shatabdi hospital at Kandivli was shut down some years ago due to lack of funds, adds Dsouza, saying, Corporators and MLAs should allot more money from their funds for the repair of such hospitals.

He continues, There is no point in spending crores on building new hospitals when existing hospitals are in such a dilapidated condition, referring to the proposed construction of a new government hospital at Bhabrekar Nagar, Orlem. The foundation stone for this hospital was laid on Oct 4 by chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.

Parul Mehta, corporator of ward no 139, says, I agree that funds should be used for improving municipal hospitals, which are in a bad state. But there is other work that also needs to be undertaken and we do not have the necessary funds. I will definitely allot Rs five lakh for the repair of Choksi Maternity Home in the next budgetary session.

PU Mehta, MLA, Malad (W), says, I am aware of the bad shape of the municipal maternity home at Marve Road. In fact the entire area does not have a good municipal hospital. That is precisely why we decided to start a government hospital equipped with the best facilities at Bhabrekar Nagar. I am confident that the government hospital will not suffer the same plight as the municipal hospitals in the area.

He has also promised to help repair the Choksi maternity home.
