Lokmanya Tilak School
My school teachers have been instrumental in my success. They guided me in every stepAmanjeet Arora stood second in the SSC board with 94.53 per centJune 22, 2004 was a day when Sau Laxmibai English School, Friends Co-operative English High School and Sharon English High School could not stop celebrating.
While Sau Laxmibai had four SSC merit listers to its credit, Friends Co-operative School and Sharon English High School produced one merit ranker each.
After the SSC results were declared on June 24, 2005, the mood was very different from the previous year in these schools. Sharon English School
Despite being the among most reputed and high-profile schools in the suburb, not a single student featured in the SSC merit list this year. The toppers of these schools have just about touched 90 per cent this year.
They have the best of infrastructure, discipline and staff and parents make a beeline to get their kids admitted to these schools every year. So what went wrong?
I studied hard and I thought I would be in the merit. I am not at all satisfied with my performance
TS Shailesh topped the school with 90.53 per cent Prasad Kulkarni, the principal of Sau Laxmibai maintains that their students had the right preparation and motivation to repeat last years magic but somehow it didnt work this year.
The maths and science papers were tough. Our toppers were not able to score more than 140 out of 150 in these scoring subjects. I think thats the primary reason why we didnt make it to the merit list this year, says Kulkarni.
He adds, Last year, we had exceptionally bright kids so its no surprise we had four merit rankers.
However, this years batch was average. But that's no excuse as its our duty to prepare the students well. We tried very hard but still we failed. However, we havent lost hope and we know well do well next year.
SV Roghle, the father of Priyanka Roghle, the Sau Laxmibai School topper says that though he would have loved to see his daughter figure in the merit list, hes satisfied with her effort.
Like the teachers in the school, I also expected Priyanka to find a place in the merit list. She could not score well in maths and science. But thats not the fault of her teachers; the papers were tough, says Roghle, who is a lecturer with a junior college at Vikhroli.
Meanwhile, Sharon High School principal Sausamma Das says that God was just not on their students side this year.
We lacked Gods grace this year. we dont blame anyone for the performance this year. I believe the children have done their best. Because no one has come in the merit that doesnt mean our students are not good in studies or teachers have failed in their endeavour, says Das.
When metro spoke to the students of these schools, we found that they too were dejected by their performances.
Says TS Shailesh, the Sharon topper, The maths and science papers were really tough. Most of us lost out because of that. I studied hard and I thought I would be in the merit. I am not at all satisfied with my performance.
Amidst the dejection, there are some schools and kids who see the bright side of things. Vijaya Narayan, the principal of Friends School, maintains that merit list is not the yardstick to prove a schools or a childs caliber.
We believe in producing allrounders. The topper of my school missed a merit rank by just a few marks. But we are very happy with our students performances, says Narayan.
Sharon topper Alisha Gadar echos her principals sentiment. Nothings lost because I havent stood in the merit. Our teachers have shown us a world beyond medicine and engineering. I want to study Arts in St Xaviers College and then do a BMM course. I want to be a journalist of world repute someday, says this 15-year-old.
