Channels Gaekwad lashes out at Sourav Ganguly and Brijesh Patel By: A Mid Day Correspondent December 30, 2000 Former Indian opening batsman and coach Anshuman Gaekwad came down heavily on several Indian players including captain Saurav Ganguly and the manager of the Indian World Cup squad Brijesh Patel.

In an interview to India.com, Anshuman Gaekwad came down heavily on current captain Saurav Ganguly. "When Ganguly was a mere player during the World Cup, I found him to be receptive to ideas, however after becoming captain his attitude has changed and he has become extremely stubborn," he said.

On the appointment of Brijesh Patel as the manager of the World Cup squad, Gaekwad said it was the biggest blunder that he made by suggesting Patel's name. "He (Patel) used to interfere in my job, when Bobby Simpson was there as the consultant along with me as the coach and the senior players, he used to interfere by advising players especially those from Karnataka," Gaekwad alleged.

Gaekwad further said that when captain Azharuddin had made it mandatory to speak in English or Hindi when the team was together so that no one was felt left out, Patel used to speak in Kannada with the players from the South.

Gaekwad came down heavily on the attitude of the Indian players. He said that Yuvraj Singh was an unknown player during the Nairobi tournament. However, when he made runs in the match against Australia, he signed contracts with sponsors. He felt that he had achieved everything and would not listen to me. I hope he has realised he cannot take everything for granted in this game.

Gaekwad said that it is time we follow the Australian method of contracting the players for one full year. Then the players would feel safe financially. "At the moment, the Indian players are insecure and when they go out in the middle they think about the incentives offered by their sponsors and forget the teams goals," Gaekwad added.
