Channels Alleged murderer falls victim to greed after five years By: Kishore Rathod September 25, 2000 Five years after committing a murder and escaping from the city, 30- year-old Siddhesh Gowda was finally nabbed by the city police on Saturday.

Gowda, alias Manjunath, had murdered Prembahadur Singh, a waiter in Hotel Goa Portuguesa on January 7, 1995. According to police sources, he had also broken into the locker in the hotel and decamped with Rs 40,000 to his hometown in Karnataka.

While the police had all but given up on the case, Gowda himself set them on his trail by trying to blackmail the hotelier. He sent an audio cassette by mail, to Shailesh Shetty, owner of Hotel Status in Mahim. In the cassette, Gowda demanded Rs 2 lakh from Shetty, saying that if he failed to pay up, he will also commit suicide and send another cassette to the police, saying that Shetty was responsible for his death, too.

Shetty rushed to the anti-extortion cell of the crime branch and reported the matter. After tracking his movements for almost two months, the police officers finally nabbed Gowda at Andheri on Saturday. The police team, led by PSI Daya Nayak, laid a dragnet for him near Pinky theatre and arrested him when he arrived there.
