The Special Protection Group (spg) has conducted a series of security checks inside Breach Candy Hospital here where Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's knee will be operated upon.
Hospital sources said that since Monday the SPG has carried out a series of checks, both inside and outside the hospital. These officers accompanied by local police also visited the neighbouring buildings and shops as part of the security drill.
Vajpayee, who will arrive in the city on October 8, is likely to be operated upon two days later by New York-based physician Dr Chittaranjan Rajawat.
Police sources said Commissioner M N Singh has spoken to SPG officers regarding the security arrangements. "Tight security will be maintained during the operation and his subsequent stay at Raj Bhavan," they said.
Vajpayee will be operated on the sixth or seventh floor of the hospital. The entire floor is likely to be cordoned off. Vajpayee will be in the hospital for at least three to four days after the surgery and wil then be shifted to Raj Bhavan.
Coastal patrolling will also be stepped up during Vajpayee's stay. SPG officers also surveyed the Mumbai coastline and they are constantly in touch with the deputy commissioner of police in charge of protection of vvips.
