Miss Universe 2000, Lara Dutta, was today appointed as goodwill ambassador for the UN Population Fund to campaign against HIV/AIDS and for women's access to reproductive health. Dutta will be spokeswoman for the Fund's Face-to-Face campaign, an international movement to publicise the fact that millions of women and young people in developing countries have no access to contraception.
Thoraya Obaid, Fund director, said "Ms Dutta's drive and determination, as much as her fame as Miss Universe, enable her to reach young people and talk to them about the need to seek reproductive health guidance." No effort should be spared to reach and advise the estimated one billion adolescents who were at risk from unwanted pregnancy and HIV/AIDs, Thoraya said in a statement.
