As part of the project to quadruple railway lines between Borivali and Virar, construction work on two bridges on Vasai Creek has begun, according to General Manager, Western Railway Vasudev Gupta. He added that the 5.03 km-long line between Andheri and Goregaon is likely to be opened soon.
The 4.92 kms-long fifth line between Santa Cruz and Andheri has already been thrown open for traffic in the first phase of the laying of the fifth line between Santa Cruz and Borivali. The work of converting 1500 volt DC traction between Borivali and Virar to 25 kV AC is also in progress. The work has been going on in the 22 kms-long stretch between Borivali and Virar, without disrupting train services. It is likely to be completed by the end of 2001. First rake, which can run both on AC and DC tractions has been readied at the Mahalaxmi workshop and is currently under trial. The Western Railway has also obtained an ISO 9002 certificate for its workshop and maintenance units, which indicate a mark of quality and better standards. This year, Parel Workshop and Mahalaxmi Workshop have been awarded ISO 9002 certificates, while the coaching depot at Mumbai Central will soon obtain it, after which it will become the first such depot on Indian railways to achieve this distinction.
