The recent unrest at Vikroli following rumours of the burning of the Quran, has set Javed Javil Ahmed Shaikh back by one whole academic year. He could not appear for one of his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination papers after been taken into custody by the Vikhroli police. Javed, a 19-year-old Vikhroli resident, was heading for his tuitions on March 10, when he got caught in a crowd of miscreants. The police soon arrested him on charges of rioting. He is still lodged in the Vikhroli lock-up. His elder brother Mohmmad Rafiq told MID-DAY, "When Javed failed to return from his tuitions by 11 pm, we started a hunt for him. After searching for almost two to three hours, our neighbours told us that he had been picked up by the police." Rafiq further added, "Apparently, some miscreants pelted stones at the autorickshaw stand when the police were called in. The police team that rushed to the spot arrested the miscreants, then started a hunt in our locality and picked up our children in a case of mistaken identities. They have arrested more than six youths in our locality." As March 10 was a Saturday, Javed was taken to the holiday court at Bhoiwada the next day, where his family pleaded for bail but in vain. Finally, he was remanded to police custody. Further, he could not appear for his history paper, because his parents failed to submit documents, such as his hall ticket, to the Bhoiwada court within the prescribed time limit. He managed to appear for two of his remaining examination papers under police vigilance. Javed has appeared for his SSC examination through the Anjuman Khairul Islam School in Vikhroli (E). He is the youngest in his family and lives with his mother and three brothers.
