Noted Hindi film writer and poet, Javed Akhtar today criticised Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for making "contradictory" statements on various issues including the Gujarat violence. He told reporters that when communal violence broke out in Gujarat the Prime Minister described it as a national shame and repeated it when he visited the state. "But the recent speech delivered by Vajpayee in Goa could have been made by any Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader or even Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi himself," he said. Akhtar said when the Babri Masjid was demolished Vajpayee expressed anguish at the incident but later changed his stand. The film lyricist said he had no opinion about Vajpayee since he himself did not appear to have one about himself.
