Popular television star Shekhar Suman and cine actress Amisha Patel today flagged off a marathon run for freedom from garbage, urging citizens to cooperate whole heartedly in the cleanliness drive by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Nearly 500 NCC cadets dressed in white T-shirts, shorts and caps, led by city mayor Mahesh Deole, participated in the marathon run organised by BMC on the occasion of the country's 55th Independence Day celebration. Young boys and girls, astride motorbikes, zoomed past bystanders, lined up on either side of the pavements to have a glimpse of the marathon. Several pillion riders waved out tri-colour on way to their ride from BMC headquarters in south-Mumbai to the historic August Kranti Maidan. Earlier, speaking on the occasion Shekhar Suman urged people to join the BMC campaign in ensuring a clean and green Mumbai. He lamented that though Mumbai was the commercial capital of the country and had many achievements to its credit, it had still been unable to break free from the clutches of dirt and diseases. Calling for strict legislations to curb the garbage menace, he also appealed to common man to take up the drive on an individual level besides striving for collective campaign for cleanliness in the society. Amisha Patel said though India had become free from the colonial clutches, it continued to be a slave to dirt and unhygienic conditions and added that the BMC slogan 'Come let us Make Mumbai beautiful', should end on a positive and successful note
