Railway police have busted double the number of people on the Western Railway for violations like ticketless travel, travelling on train tops and in ladies compartments so far this year compared to last year.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) unit of WRs Mumbai division, which has jurisdiction from Churchgate to Dahanu, has announced that it apprehended 29,444 people till November this year under the Indian Railways Act.

Violations also include hawking, touting and defacing public property. Last year, the RPF apprehended 14,570 people.

Fines realised this year have also jumped from Rs 12.96 lakh last year to Rs 26.69 lakh this year.

Assistant Security Commissioner Rajan Datt attributed the 1,500-strong RPF units success to the inclusion of younger personnel and emphasis on alert patrolling. We intend to keep the flag flying high the coming year as well, he said.

100% track record in detecting movable property thefts
For the second consecutive year, the RPFs Western Railway Mumbai division has solved every case registered with it under the Railways Property Act.

Under the Act, the RPF is entrusted with busting those who steal movable property belonging to the railways from Churchgate to Dahanu. Till November, it has solved all 86 cases and recovered the entire stolen amount Rs 21.33 lakh.

Of the 142 people arrested, two are railway personnel. Last year, the unit solved all 94 cases, recovered Rs 15.66 lakh of Rs 15.78 lakh worth of movable property stolen and arrested 144 people.

This year, the highlight was the arrests of Rajkumar Mishra and Sailesh Pandey, who stole Rs 18.51 lakh from the Virar stationmasters office on November 22. The case was solved within 48 hours.
