A Khar resident was arrested yesterday for the alleged rape of a 27-year-old Swedish make-up artiste who was residing in his house as a paying guest.
Police have taken the accused into custody, but the future of the charges are in doubt as the doctor who examined both him and the Swedish woman said the medical exams were made too late to determine if there had been any sexual intercourse.
The identities of both the accused and the Swedish woman are being withheld.
The Swede has been visiting Mumbai frequently since 1999. She works on contract with beauty companies in the city.
A friend had introduced her to the accused, and she began staying with him as a PG whenever she came to Mumbai.
According to her police complaint, the accused took advantage of her confidence in him and raped her at their residence on Friday at about 5 am.
However, she only registered a complaint at the Khar Police Station on Saturday night.
The police arrested the accused and booked him for rape.
Dr B S Shinde, medical officer at the police hospital, Nagpada, who examined both complainant and accused, said, "The complaint has been lodged very late. In such cases it is difficult to find evidence of intercourse. Also, there were no injury marks on either of them."
The Swedish woman was examined on Saturday, while the accused was examined yesterday evening.
