A 27 year old man, Pravesh Pathak, was stabbed by an unidentified assailant yesterday evening at Andheri (West). Pathak is in critical condition in Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle.

While police believe an old enmity could be the motive, Pathak told a doctor that the assailant had merely wanted his mobile phone.

A resident of Vakola, Santa Cruz (East), Pathak is a BPL SIM card distributor for Amboli, Lokhandwala and Andheri.

S Jadhav, an officer with the Oshiwara Police Station, said, "At around 5 pm, Pathak was near a bus stop near Kamat's Club, Andheri.

The assailant came from behind and pulled him by the hair and stabbed him in the chest with a knife. The assailant said, 'Abbe, tu hi tha na uss din?' and fled."

But Pathak told police he had never seen the assailant before.
