A road divider on the Eastern Express Highway, below the Chedda Nagar flyover A Poorly illuminated road divider on the Eastern Express Highway, just below the Chedda Nagar flyover, has caused 14 accidents in the past one month alone.
With visibility reduced drastically and roads becoming slippery during the rains, Thane-bound motorists see the barricade too late and ram into it.
Fortunately, none of the accidents so far have been fatal, but many people have sustained severe injuries and vehicles have been badly damaged.
The divider was built late last year to separate a lane for Shivaji Nagar-bound traffic.
Now, alarmed by the high number of accidents, the Tilak Nagar police, under whose jurisdiction the location falls, has written to the Public Works Department (PWD) to install either a light pole or blinking signal to warn motorists of the divider. Till a proposal to install a lamppost is cleared, PWD officials have erected a radium indicator at the spot.
Senior Inspector S M Tanwar, of the Tilak Nagar Police Station, said, Four of the accidents that took place last month happened within a span of 24 hours, during a spell of heavy rain. We had even placed a lantern at the spot as a temporary arrangement.
K S Jangde, superintendent engineer, PWD, said, We are working in coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation to illuminate the area and work will begin as soon as we get the necessary clearances.
