Anywhere, anytime
The new system will help DCPs and higher get information on:
* Dates, locations and number of shootouts and encounters in the city.
* Any motor vehicles which have been robbed.
Officials of the Indian Police Service (IPS) will no longer have to wait for hours to access criminals records. They will get records at the press of a button on their mobile phones.
The Mumbai polices computer cell is putting into place a system that will help top officials get instant information about gangsters, their records, shootouts, encounters and even thefts of vehicles on their mobile phones.
Javed Ahmed, joint commissioner of police, Law and Order, said: The system is currently being tested on the cell phones of a few officials. Once tests are over and results are positive, all senior officials will obtain this facility.
The computer cell, situated at Mumbai police headquarters, Crawford Market, will act as stocker and furnisher of this information.
The Mumbai police would be first in India to introduce such a hi-tech facility, accessible to officials of the rank of deputy commissioner of police and higher.
Each official will get a separate 10-digit code that would have to be dialled to get the required information.
After dialling, officials may select the category of crime about which they seek information. They would also have to key in any names they may want records about.
Within a minute of sending in details, officials will access records on the screen of their cell phone.
Officials would be informed of the introduction of this facility through the Short Messaging Service (SMS).
