The Delhi police are ready for Round 2 in the Abu Salem extradition case. They will launch a fresh attempt to get the underworld don returned from Portugal once the Mumbai police hands over its report on the 35 cases registered against him in the city.
The papers relating to Salem alias Abdul Qayyum Ansari will be handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials from Delhi who are already in Mumbai.
Shridhar Vagal, joint Commissioner of police, said, Digvekar, joint director of the Delhi CBI, informed me of his visit to Mumbai. They asked for records of the offences registered against Salem and we are doing the needful.
A team of 20 to 25 officers of the Mumbai polices Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) and Computer Cell are gathering records on the crime lord who is currently detained in Lisbon.
CIU sleuths are communicating with officers who investigated each of the 35 cases to get further details. Also, most of the case papers put before the court are in Marathi and are being translated into English.
A CIU source said, We have been busy collecting details about Salem for three days, leaving aside all our routine work. Every officer in our department is working on the case.
The CIU officers were expected to hand over their report to top Mumbai police officials yesterday, who in turn would peruse it and pass it on to the Delhi CBI.
The Mumbai police are playing a smaller role in the CBIs attempt to get the underworld don extradited, despite the fact that 35 of the 44 cases registered against him are at Mumbai police stations. The city police were not even part of the earlier team that visited Lisbon.
The 44 cases registered against Salem include robberies, extortion, making threatening phone calls, attempted murders and murders.
Aside from the Mumbai cases, six cases are registered in Bhopal, two in Lucknow and one in Ahmedabad.
