In a major change in underworld equations, Subhash Singh Thakur, who leads a breakaway faction from the Chhota Shakeel gang, has hooked up with Shakeels rival Chhota Rajan to help reinforce the latters power in Mumbai.
The merger of the two strong gangs has come to light following investigations into last months firing incident outside the J-49 nightclub in Juhu, when four unidentified assailants fired more than 30 rounds at the establishments entrance. The shooters, whose apparent intent was only to scare, fired aimlessly, but a bullet struck the right leg of doorman Dinesh Jha (30), who was admitted to Cooper Hospital, Vile Parle.
Thakur, once a small-time robber from Khar (East), came into the news after his involvement in a shootout at JJ, Byculla, in September 1992. He was arrested under TADA and put in Tihar jail. He then became a known name in the underworld.
