Puerto Vallarta: Fugitive rapist and heir to the Max Factor fortune, Andrew Luster, has been arrested by police in the Mexican town of Puerto Vallarta.

Luster had been on the run since he fled his trial in January, where he was convicted in absentia of multiple counts of rape, poisoning and drug possession. The 39-year-old millionaire was arrested outside a nightclub.

Several bounty hunters, who were apparently trying to detain him, were also arrested. Reports say neighbours in the area complained of noise as the group tussled with Luster.

He has been handed to Mexican authorities and is now expected to be deported.

Appeal ruled out

Luster disappeared on January 3, despite being under house arrest and wearing an electronic tag.

His car and dog were found later that month.

He was sentenced to 124 years in prison for raping three women and drugging two of them with the so-called date rape drug GHB at his home in California.

His lawyers argued during the trial that the sex had been consensual and suggested that Luster may have been kidnapped or had an accident.

But last week a Californian court ruled out an appeal, saying he had forfeited his right to appeal by skipping bail and going on the run. Luster is the great-grandson of Max Factor, who established a cosmetics empire in 1920s Hollywood.
