Mumbai polices Quick Response Team (QRT), dedicated to meet terrorist-related threats in and around city, played an important role in defusing the volatile situation at the international airport on Saturday.

Two teams compromising 19 QRT jawans reached the airport around 11.05 pm on Saturday to rescue the six Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) lady constables who had been taken hostage by CISF constable Ramnarayan Namdeo, who had earlier shot dead his superior.

Members of the QRT said that the rescue of the CISF lady constables was tougher than handling a terrorist attack, as they were instructed by superiors to capture Namdeo but to avoid firing.

As soon as we reached the airport, we gheraoed the room in which Namdeo was. As the room was glassed in, he was able to monitor all our movements, said Sub-Inspector Mahesh Jadhav who headed the QRT team.

Moreover Namdeo was equipped with an SLR rifle and 30 live bullets a single adverse movement would have cost us our lives, he added.

Namdeo was very cautious. Entering the room was not an easy task though we were equipped with bullet-proof jackets. When he saw the QRT team he realised he could not walk out safely, and finally surrendered, Jadhav added.

In the middle of QRTs preparations to launch the operation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Bipin Bihari and a senior CISF official approached the jawan and convinced Namdeo to surrender before the police.

QRT quotient

Mumbai polices Quick Response Team (QRT) is a 56-member team comprising an assistant commissioner of police, a senior police inspector, six sub inspectors and jawans drawn from Mumbai Metropolitan Police.

The team, all members of which are below 30, was trained on the lines of the National Security Guards and stationed in Kalina in Central Mumbai following the terrorist attack on Akshardham temple in Gujarat
