The police today arrested two persons, including a woman, for alleged manufacture and sale of illicit liquor while the toll in the liquor tragedy in suburban Vikhroli has mounted to 67. The two, Sunil and Laxmi, were produced before a local court which remanded them to police custody till January four. With this, thirty persons have been arrested in the past few days, including those from neighbouring Thane and Nhava Sheva, for their alleged involvement in the illicit liquor trade. Meanwhile, nine more persons have died since last evening, taking the toll to 67 while nearly 75 persons were still undergoing treatment, hospital sources said adding that their condition was serious. Of the 174 persons admitted to Rajawadi Hospital, 50 succumbed to internal haemorrhage caused by the spurious liquor while ten persons were brought dead, Hospital Dean, Dr V B Shukla told PTI. Some patients have been discharged. At Sion Hospital, six of the 34 persons admitted, had died, while one died at KEM Hospital at Lower Parel in central Mumbai, hospital sources said. Taking stern action against the erring officials, the Maharashtra government yesterday has suspended 27 officials, including five officials of Excise department and 22 policemen.
