St Peters (Mazgoan) are the under-12 Division II inter-school football champs.
At the Don Bosco Ground in Matunga on Saturday, they beat St Joseph (Vikhroli) 3-1 to claim honours in the Mumbai School Sports Association-conducted tournament.
St Peters had another reason to celebrate as they are now back in the top division after being relegated last year.
The match was expected to be evenly contested as both teams had been playing well off late. Both sides scored a goal each in the first half.
The match swung in favour of the Mazgaon side in second half as they took control of the proceedings. Captain Sheriyaz Shetty rose to the occasion and sealed victory with back-to-back goals.
In the second half, St Joseph lacked aggression, probably due to lack of stamina and St Peters were quick to take advantage of that. Eleven-year-old Sheriyaz was delighted with the result. I am happy that I scored in the finals. It was a team effort. Everyone played well and contributed to the win.
