Channels US national caught with live cartridge By: A Mid Day Correspondent September 28, 2004 The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) caught a US national at the international airport on Friday for allegedly concealing a live cartridge in his hand baggage.

Douglas Macdonald, 48, a resident of New Hampshire in Massachusetts, United States came to Mumbai on an Air-India flight AI 112 from New York and was headed for Hyderabad at around 3 pm by an Air-India flight.

During the security check-in for the Hyderabad flight, the on-duty CISF personnel discovered a live round of a .22 calibre revolver. Macdonald also did not have a valid weapons licence.

When asked about the licence, Macdonald said that in the US, a .22 revolver did not require a licence and hence he did not have a one, said an official from the Sahar police station.

Chandrakant Pawaskar, ACP Airport Division said that Macdonald was handed over to the Sahar police by the CISF and was booked under section 3 of the Arms Act and section 25 of the Aircraft Act. He was subsequently produced in court and released on a bail of Rs 4,000, said Pawaskar.

Pawaskar said that Macdonald was a hobby shooter and an influential businessman in the US.

He had come to India on a business trip. He is in Mumbai now and has been asked to come to the Sahar police station daily for the next week at least, said Pawaskar.

He had kept the live round unknowingly in his hand baggage, but according to the law of the land, we had to register a case. Hopefully, he should be allowed to go to Hyderabad next week, he added. Email this article Print this article Post / View comments
