The Sri Lankan cricket board will take its time before trying out the new rules incorporated into the one-day games, it has been learnt.
Sri Lanka Crickets acting chief executive Bandula Warnapura confirmed with Mid Day yesterday that the new rules have not been welcomed either by the players or by the board officials.
As a result, the tri-series involving India and the West Indies will be played under the old format. Indias international season gets underway on July 30.
We felt it was unfair to try these rules out without having given them a try in the domestic one-day season, which starts only in two months, explained Warnapura, who has played 12 one-day internationals between 1975 and 1982.
Warnapura also admitted they were cautious about the changes. Our Twenty20 tournament was a huge flop this season as very few spectators turned up, he said.
Its okay to introduce change in the shorter format, since one-day cricket is a carnival.
But I hope this trend wont seep into the Test matches, he said, confirming that Sri Lanka will embrace the change in a three-match series against Bangladesh in September.
Indias chance to first hand experience the recent one-day changes will be on their August-September tour of Zimbabwe, BCCI joint secretary Goutam Dasgupta confirmed.
The new system has already been tried in a limited-overs series the three-match NatWest Challenge in England.
