Sanjay Nirupam

After being booted out of the Shiv Sena, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Nirupam has now set his eyes on the Congress.

And it might be profitable for the Mumbai Congress too, which is looking for a North Indian face to checkmate Kripashankar Singh.

Sources in the Congress said Nirupam had met top leaders in the party in Delhi on Wednesday.

We have faced constant criticism for sidelining Kripashankar Singh and dropping him from the ministry. Nirupam belongs to the same constituency and it suits us to hire him. But we will have to figure out what his actual demands are, said a Congress functionary close to Mumbai Congress chief, Gurudas Kamat. Singh and Kamat have been at loggerheads for months now.

Next on Congress agenda is to get Union Sports Minister Sunil Dutts approval. Nirupam and Dutt were rivals in the recent Lok Sabha polls. But Dutt maintained, I am away in Ahmedabad and unaware of this issue.

Congress spokesperson Anant Gadgil said, Nirupam is welcome if our leadership and ideology is acceptable to him.

It is also learnt that Nirupam is talking to the Samajwadi Party (SP). He is close to SP stalwart Amar Singh.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leaders are not surprised at Nirupams moves. He has always been close to the Congress and SP. Even when he was a Sena MP, he rarely attacked the Congress. He only aimed his jibes at BJP, said a Sena MP.
