A collection box placed outside college festivals and seminars to raise money for the medical insuranceStudents of HR college, Churchgate, will give peons of the college and their families medical help and will enroll them for medical insurance.

The Students Council of the HR College has taken up the initiative of insuring the peons and paying their lifelong premiums.

We want to help them so that they have a great future, said Ayesha Limathwalla, a council member. The college also provides a free one-time meal and vitamin tablets (Becosules).

We are also taking care of their children. They have made life easier for us, why should they be deprived of such benefits? questioned Rekha Bahadur, the head of Students Council.

The students are trying to do whatever best they can do, she added. The council has already spoken to few insurance companies and is planning to gift the policies to the 40-odd associates during Diwali.

Last year the college had started an Associates Welfare Fund for collecting the amount needed for the project. The Students Council also places collection boxes outside organised functions and seminars. So far, around Rs 2 lakh has been collected.

Reactions...

We just thought that they should have something to fall back on, in case of an emergency. If the peons or their families are admitted to hospital for some reason, they should have some kind of aid.
Gaurav Chovatia, treasurer of the Students Council

Hamare family ko bhi bahut fayda hoga insurance policy se. The college has always stood by us in times of crisis.
Anil Kumar, a peon at HR college

I was once asked to put my library fine in the collection box.
Saurabh Kushwaha, an SYBCom student
