The robbers were using this Chinese-made plastic Mauser. It resembles a real pistol and can be bought at any toy shop for a couple of hundred rupeesArmed with a toy pistol, a five-member gang pulled off over 17 robberies between Goregaon and Malad in less than a year.
However, their luck ran out on Sunday evening when they were nabbed by the Goregaon police, who were tipped that the gang would be targeting a local diamond merchant in Kiran Industrial Estate, Goregaon.
We were surprised that the pistol that they were carrying was actually a Chinese-made plastic Mauser, that almost resembles the real thing. It had a metallic finish and can be procured at any toy shop for a couple of hundred rupees, said Zonal DCP Dattarya Karale.
Ambush tactics
Senior PI Ashok Ingole of Goregaon police station, who is investigating the case, said that gold jewellery worth Rs 3.6 lakh, stolen vehicles and country-made pistols and choppers were recovered from the gangs hideout in Goregaon.
The gangsters are known to strike using ambush tactics, using stolen motor vehicles for a quick getaway. We are in the process of identifying the rightful owners and also detecting fresh cases against the accused, said Ingole.
PI Deepak Phatangre, who participated in the raid informed that the accused, who have been identified as Kishan Sharma (29), Noor Mohammed Sheikh (35),Prahrad Sakpal(34), Santosh Gaud (25) and Babloo Yadhav (19), have been remanded to police custody till April 24. |
