Sion resident Shekhar Nadkar (21) was arrested by the police, after an hour-long drama, for murdering a 17-year-old maidservant yesterday.
Shekhar, a driver, strangulated Nirmala (name changed) to death last evening as her parents did not agree to their marriage.
Another maidservant Neelima (15), who was present when Shekhar locked himself with Nirmala at Yashodhan Apartments in Jain Society, alerted her parents and the police control room.
Nirmala and Neelima were employed at the society. Shekhar had come in the afternoon to question Nirmala on why she wasnt marrying him. However, Neelima got suspicious when neither Shekhar nor Nirmala responded to knocks on the door.
When the police forcibly opened the door, they found Nirmala lying on the bed with a cloth around her neck and Shekhar lying on the floor.
Shekhar pretended that he had consumed poison and the girl had hung herself from the ceiling and that they both wanted to commit suicide, as they couldnt get married to each other, revealed an officer from Sion police station.
However, police found Shekhars claims unsatisfactory when he was taken for medical examination. He wasnt answering any questions. The reports pointed that he was normal and had not consumed poison. We interrogated him and found that he had strangulated Nirmala. He liked her, but her family wanted to get her married to someone else, added the officer.
Siddharth Medhe, Nirmalas father, who is a driver, said, I had told her a month back that we will get her married soon. We have not spoken to Shekhar. Who? Shekhar Nadkar
