Dead end
Nimisha Khambe (8), a resident of Mahadevchi Wadi in Parel Village, was run over by a tempo around 4.15 pm near Kirti College in Dadar yesterday. Nimisha was on her way to celebrate dahi-handi with her father Rajesh, when he lost control of the bike.
She fell off and was crushed under the wheels of a tempo. She was taken to KEM hospital at 4.50 pm, but was declared brought-dead. Incidentally, the tempo belonged to the Govinda Vyayamshala of which Rajesh is a member. The police are interrogating the driver. Pic: Rane Ashish Knocked down by BEST mirror
Every year, when the rest of Mumbai celebrates dahi handi, Lakhan Vishwas Ghatges family, will remember the tragic circumstances of his death yesterday. Ghatge (16) died while returning home after taking part in the dahi handi celebrations at N M Joshi Marg, Lower Parel.
A resident of Kamgar Nagar, Prabhadevi, Ghatge was hanging out of a truck carrying 150 revellers. As the truck reached Sena Bhavan around 4.45 pm, a BEST bus overtook it and the side-view mirror of the bus hit Ghatge and knocked him to the ground. He was run over by the rear wheels of his truck.
Ghatge was a Std X student at the Yashwantrao Chavan School, Lower Parel and was part of the Hanuman Mitra Mandal, which broke the handi at NM Joshi Marg.
Ghatge was near the drivers cabin. There were many others standing there, but only he fell off. We rushed him to KEM Hospital, but two hours later he died, said Vikas Dalvi, a friend.
Abdul ShaikhCrushed under speeding wheels
His yearning to break the coveted dahi handi cost Sharif Abdul Shaikh (24), resident of Ghatkopar, his life. Abdul was crushed under the wheels of a speeding BEST bus (route 416) at 3.15 pm yesterday after he fell from the top tier of a human pyramid on the road near Ghatkopars Indira Nagar slums.
Abdul was engrossed in breaking the handi with his friends. As the pyramid collapsed, they all fell on the ground and Abdul screamed, said Shamimbhai, a neighbour. The bus had run over Abdul, leaving him in a pool of blood.
Though Abdul died instantly, he was taken to the Rajawadi Hospital. His post-mortem report is still awaited. The BEST driver was first beaten up by locals, after which the Ghatkopar police took him into custody. The angry mob also smashed windowpanes.
What was the big hurry? The drivers rash driving cost a young man his life, complained an angry local.
A driver by profession, Abdul, the youngest of four siblings, was to marry soon. |
