At 5.30 am yesterday, Aasma Mada (33) ran the Opel Astra she was driving over two people sleeping on a pavement near Hinduja Hospital on Cadell Road, Mahim, killing both on the spot.
Mada, a clinical psychologist from Oman, arrived in India only three days ago, and was with three friends, when the accident occurred. One of the dead has been identified as Thapa, a middle-aged domestic servant.
Fled the scene
Mada and her friends Vikram Shetty (30), Pamela DSouza (25), and Mansi Hasan (25) were heading home to Juhu from Worli Seaface when the accident occurred. Though the car was badly damaged, all four managed to escape without any injury.
According to the police, Mada, Hasan and DSouza fled the scene, while Vikram, who owns the car, stayed back to take the victims to Bhabha Hospital, Bandra. The three women were picked up from Madas Juhu residence a couple of hours after the incident and the FIR was finally lodged at 1 pm yesterday.
Wine bottle found
The police have registered a case of rash and negligent driving against Aasma. They added that Mada was driving without a license. We have found a wine bottle in the car and have already taken her for a medical examination. Her reports are awaited, said Senior Inspector Joseph Gaikwad, Mahim police station.
In her statement to the cops, Mada said I was trying to avert an accident with a taxi. The driver was speeding and trying to overtake us. If I had not taken the turn, our car would have crashed into the taxi. She added that they left the spot and went home for first-aid, as one of her friends was injured. Who? Aasma Mada What?
