The Crawford Market redevelopment plan passed by the BMCs Improvement Committee last week is in limbo, as the policy on which it is based is yet to be approved by the civic body.
Municipal secretary department sources say that this is an unprecedented development in the corporations history.
Says leader of Nationalist Congress Party Ravindra Pawar, With the market redevelopment policy still under consideration, how can the Improvement Committee clear the markets redevelopment proposal?
The man behind the controversy is Bharatiya Janata Party councillor and Improvement Committee chairman Bhalchandra Shirsat, who tabled the Crawford Market proposal and also had it passed.
Shirsat reopened the redevelopment policy in the general body meeting on January 6, but it was stalled. A discussion on it is scheduled to come up in May.
Says Shirsat, I wanted to amend one clause and make provision for a policy formulation panel comprising leader of the House, opposition leader, chairman of the Market and Garden Committee and chairman of Improvement Committee.
The Crawford Market proposal is under scanner as opposition parties have unanimously said that the civic body should redevelop the property on its own, rather than allow a developer do it.
