Killed Injured Police Sub-inspector Babasaheb Adhav Constable Bhiku Karde in the ICU of MGM Hospital in Vashi Sub-inspector Babasaheb Adhav (35) may have had better chances of survival had he gone prepared to combat armed dacoits. The officer, who rushed to the spot with an unarmed constable, was taken by surprise and shot dead.
Constable Bhiku Karde, attacked with a chopper, is fighting for his life. MiD DAY brings details of the foiled bank dacoity attempt in Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank, Airoli, yesterday morning.
The incident
Five chopper and pistol-wielding men held a few staffers and customers of the bank captive soon at 8 am. A member of the gang seemed familiar with the working of the bank. The people in the bank were locked in a bathroom, while the dacoits searched for the locker keys.
One of the customers hid his mobile phone and called the Thane police control room. Adhav, who had just completed his night shift, rushed to the bank with constable Bhiku Karde and driver P Bansode. According to Deputy Commissioner (Zone 1) Amar Jadhav, Adhav presumed the robbers had left, as there was no movement outside the bank. He was taken by surprise on entering, and was shot in his chest. He died on the spot.
The eyewitness
Bansode, who was parking his jeep, spotted a few men leaving the premises in a black Honda City. Bansode, who was unaware of the attack, suspected foul play and wrote down the car number MH-12-CK-7496.
Sitting outside the Intensive Care Unit of MGM Hospital in Vashi, Kardes wife Alka said, My husband has put 30 years of service, but the department did not even bother to inform his family about his condition.
Ahmednagars Adhav is survived by wife and two small children. The bank has announced compensation of Rs 8 lakh to Adhavs family.
Based on the eyewitness account, the police have made the sketches of four suspects.
