Vijay Patil, the then police sub-inspector at Shrivardhan police station in Raigad district, was today convicted by a designated TADA court for his alleged complicity in 1993 bomb blasts conspiracy.

The court also held four suspended constables guilty of taking part in the conspiracy into the blasts, but acquitted three other policemen of the same charge.

Patil was convicted under Sec 120 (b) of IPC (conspiracy) and S 3(3) of TADA (P) Act (aiding abetting a terrorist act). Patil was found guilty of allowing trucks containing arms and ammunition to pass through Ghondgar Phata in Raigad district, enabling smooth passage of weapons and explosives to Mumbai.

Explosives, including RDX were smuggled from Pakistan, and brought by speedboat on Shekhadi coast in Raigad in January '93.

Patil was in custody for over five years and is now on bail. He was suspended immediately after arrest. He was summoned to the court today for the verdict and taken into custody immediately thereafter.
