The Mahim Dargah Trust plans to renovate the 350-year-old shrine in the next two years. The shrine will have imported marble flooring, soaring dome, air-conditioned interiors and a holding capacity of 2,000 devotees The trust managing Baba Makhdum Shah Dargah, popularly known as Mahim Dargah plans to renovate the 350-year-old shrine at a cost of Rs 4 crore in the next two years.
Following renovation, the dargah will have a separate section for women and hold 2,000 devotees at a time instead of the 300 it holds now. Imported marble will be laid on 4,000 sq ft of the shrine. The interiors will be air-conditioned and its dome will be raised by 72 ft, which will make it visible from the Bandra-Worli sea link. Architect Chetan Raikar, who has been hired for the renovation, said, It will be a great challenge to complete this ISO-certified project.
Who was makhdum mahim? Sufi Makhdum Mahimi, a scholar renowned for his liberalism, traced his lineage to Prophet Mohammed. His family descended from Arab settlers who had settled in Mahim island. His mother once asked him to fetch some water.
The saint, found her asleep when he returned. He spent the whole night, holding the jar of water beside his mother. Moved by his exemplary obedience, she declared that he would be henceforth called Makhdum (servant of God).
