KHATAM BHI KARO! Venkat Iyer with his wife refer to the correspondence they had with HDFC Bank over their personal loan Marketing consultant Venkat Iyer (42) is very upset with HDFC after the bank debited Rs 75,000 from his account last month towards a Rs 2.5 lakh personal loan, which he says, was paid off a year-and-a-half ago.
Iyer says, the numerous mails he sent to HDFC, seeking foreclosure of the personal loan he had taken in July 2002, drew no response from the bank.
Later, on January 5, 2006, he and his wife approached Kiran Alke, the HDFC deputy manager retail credit and risk, and subsequently paid two installments of Rs 75,000 and Rs 35,000 towards the final settlement of the loan. Alke, the Iyers added, promised to send a formal closure letter soon.
When the closure letter did not arrive, the Iyers made numerous follow ups with the bank. In response, they received a letter from Binesh Vinherkar, retail asset collection, HDFC, asking them to clear a balance of Rs 70,856 towards the said loan account.
Our repeated attempts to settle the issue with HDFC have fallen on deaf ears. They have erroneously debited Rs 75,000 from our account. We have no option, but to approach the courts, said Iyer.
HDFC bank spokesperson Neeraj Jha said, This is a case of willful default, contrary to the claims made by Iyer and we have evidence to prove it.
People default on loans and then run to the media, which should realise that it is being taken for a ride. Interestingly, Jha admitted that he had not spoken to Alke before commenting on the issue.
