A special TADA court today sentenced convict Salim Shaikh to two concurrent life sentences for his role in the 1993 serial blasts case. The court also directed him to pay a fine of Rs 1.40 lakh. Shaikh was convicted for being present at Tiger Memon's residence when the RDX was filled in vehicles that were used in the serial blasts on March 12, 1993. However, his confession revealed that he had not filled the explosives in the vehicles due to the fear of dirtying his hands with the black RDX. Additionally, Shaikh was convicted on charges of driving three other persons who threw hand grenades at the Mahim Fishermen's Colony killing three persons and injuring six. The court had also convicted Shaikh on charges of illegal possession of a pistol. The judge made it clear that since Shaikh had not hurled the grenades nor planted the bombs he had been spared death penalty. The court has now completed the pronouncing of sentences of 76 people convicted for their role in the 1993 serial blasts in the city which left 253 dead and 713 injured.
