| It took just one visit by Kurla MLA Naseem Khan to Vilasrao Deshmukh to make him issue orders to the BMC to stall the handover of 12 markets to private developers in the Crawford Market development issue.
But Deshmukh seems to have turned a deaf ear on the issue now. Yesterday, when MiD DAY tried to speak to Deshmukh about Crawford Market, he excused himself saying, “I am in a meeting, call me later.” He did not pick up calls later.
In contrast, South Mumbai Congress MP, Milind Deora, took a strong stand saying he is opposed to the Crawford Market proposal as it is against the interests of the city.
But some seemed to suffer from selective amnesia. Leader of the opposition and Congress councillor Rajhans Singh in an interview in MiD DAY yesterday claimed he was not aware the market was being given to a private developer. This when the House has already passed the deal to the private developer, East/West constructions.
While Rajhans claimed that Congress had not changed its stand and was just ‘neutral’ when the deal was being tabled in the house, Deora said he is “dead against the proposal in its current form”.
“There is only one reason why none of these corporators are giving an explanation. It is corruption,” said RTI activist Shailesh Gandhi.
