Wants to redevelop 57 markets, but will not outsource it to builders The controversial Crawford Market redevelopment proposal, passed last week, has stalled the redevelopment of 57 markets all over Mumbai.
Municipal Commissioner Dr Jairaj Phatak said, We are making a new policy to redevelop markets by itself, which will be finalised in two months.
Unlike the Crawford Market proposal, which was outsourced to a private builder Aggarwal builders which raised the stink of corruption at high levels, this time around, the BMC wants to play it safe.
The 57 markets, all in a dilapidated condition, will be redeveloped and project affected people (PAP), whose businesses have been disrupted because of road-widening projects and the Brimstowad project (building stormwater drains) will be housed in these markets.
Added Phatak, We are now preparing the policy outlining the number of PAPs in each ward.
Sources said that the BMC needed to rehabilitate 4,000 persons under the scheme.
Yashwant Jadhav, chairman of market and garden committee, disagreed with the administrations point of view.
He said, Out of 102 markets, redevelopment of 57 are on the way, but what about the rest? Also, it will be difficult and time consuming for the BMC to redevelop all the markets.
